Pontefract is a market town in West Yorkshire. It has a population of 30,881 and a current average sale price of £146,575.

Sites of interest include the ruins of Pontefract Castle, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. King Richard II is believed to have died at the castle in 1400. Other royal visitors to the castle include Edward II, Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scots. The castle was besieged during the English Civil War. All Saints' Church is a Grade II* listed building and has features dating from the Middle Ages, although the smaller inner church was completed during the 1960s. St Giles' Church is also Grade II* listed and was rebuilt during the eighteenth-century. Pontefract Museum is a local museum in the town.

Pontefract has facilities for sports such as cricket, football and squash. Pontefract Collieries F.C. play their home games at the Harratt Nissan Stadium, which has a capacity of 1,200. Pontefract Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue in the town.

Schools in the area include Carleton Community High School and the King's School. NEW College is a coeducational sixth form college in Pontefract, and was established in 1987.

Pontefract has three railway stations: Pontefract Monkhill, Pontefract Tanshelf and Pontefract Baghill. Pontefract Monkhill railway station is the town's busiest station, and offers services to destinations including Leeds, Knottingley and Goole. There are bus services in operation in the town.
